Q&A: General Astronomy and Space Science
Q:
When will the Local Group of Galaxies fall into and join
the Virgo cluster?
A:
The Local Group and the Virgo cluster won't collide for a very long time,
even by astronomical standards. Based on the relative velocity between
these objects and their separation, a merger shouldn't happen for about 50
billion years, or much older than the age of the Universe. By that time,
the Milky Way and M31 should have merged.
